Expert Business Plan

I have looked over a number of different experts in this field and the two experts that I have really taken a liking too are Angelo Meneguzzi and Chuck Blakeman. Both very smart men at business development, leadership, and strategic planning. Chuck Blakeman is an author and business mentor, and from what I have read has a different way of viewing things when it comes to business. Chuck Blakeman makes it clear that writing a business plan is a waste of time and it can be time spent working on the business itself. Angelo Meneguzzi is another great resource when it comes to business planning. Angelo has an extensive marketing background and focuses on the importance of business development and PR. Both experts are very similar and yet have different views on business planning and what it means to build a strong business.

There are many key components that investors look at when looking at a plan two big ones are financial performance and background in the particular industry. I believe this stand out most because in my experience investors always want to see the financial projections sheets, and see how much experience I have in the industry to make the project work.

For my particular business plan I focus a lot of my proposal on the business financial projections. From what I have understood from reading Chuck and Angelo you need to know the numbers and prove to investors that your company has excellent financial performance. In my opinion this is very important. Knowing your Profits and Losses are important when pitching to investors. This to me is a major key factor when it comes to the pitch of your proposal or even a presentation of the future of your company. Investors always want to see the numbers, and what the earning potential is for them.

Digital Marketing With Google Adwords & Analytics

I am going to talk a bit about Digital Media Marketing, and what it is I exactly do in this field to help not only my artists but to help the many businesses I service on the daily basis. Digital Media Marketing is the cheapest and most inexpensive way to advertise your business and promote your brand. As a Digital Marketer and a Google Certified Partner in Analytics & Adwords, I have discovered many new ways to help my clients grow and expand on their Digital Presence.  First, let's talk about Adwords. Adwords is an amazing program that Google has created to help advertising businesses promote their products and brands to some of the most popular sites in the world. Setting up Adwords is easy, however, can be tricky for the beginners to pick up on.  Luckily for those people, there is a program called “Adwords Express.” Which allows beginner Advertisers to set up a solid PPC campaign within minutes. For the more skilled advertisers who like to go to the next set, using the main Adwords program opens up thousands of possibilities when it comes to your digital advertising on Google, Youtube, and other sites your paying customers may visit. Adwords not only allows you to set up a strong budget, but also allows you to have total control of who clicks on your Ads when they are shown, how long they show for, and so much more. You can even set up a campaign through the efforts of “Remarketing” and get people who have already visited your website and potentially bring them back for a second chance to buy.

Another great tool Google offers is Analytics. Google Analytics can do a lot, and now Google has expanded even more with their Analytical studies. For the person just using the basic Analytics, you are able to track the number of sessions your site has, track bounce rates, see click through ratios and measure new/returning visitors, amongst many other things. Within the Analytics platform, you are able to research users who visit your site via desktop, tablet, and mobile device and see their activity when on each said device. Google Analytics is an incredible way for people to learn the science of their website, they will be able to learn what works and what does not work, and how their customers act when on their website.

All in all these two Google tools are the best there is, and Google is expanding more and more on what they can do!

Adapting To The Changing Industry

Being in the Entertainment Industry has taught me one thing, to always be on my toes and be willing to adapt to the ever-changing industry. Currently, I work as a talent manager for 6 different models and a touring band that helps raise money for MS. During this class I have been able to take new methods into my product distribution. I was recently doing a lot of research on ways to get my artists music out and my model's images out to new talent seekers. During this class, I was able to learn new methods to creating Press Release kits, as well as figuring out new methods to distribute my model's pictures, and get their name on more projects.

Having a good understanding on how this industry changes and having a solid understanding of what will be coming next in the Entertainment industry is key to having my business grow. I learned through the methods taught in the class this month how to keep up with distribution and publishing. Every time we have a photoshoot I have to come up with ways to publish the models work and distribute their photos to stores, and other people who are interested in using them as stock photos. When it comes to distributing photos from our photoshoots, we use third party sites like Shutter Stock, Getty Images, Deposit photos and many others. There are rules and regulations when it comes to distributing these photos to these companies but in the end it becomes a great way to earn extra money. There is a lot that goes into it, like different copyright releases and marketing, as well as having all the proper photo releases of the models in order. Years prior to all these online avenues to sell photos, industry professionals had to do most of their distribution via mail, and sending their models photos to the respected editors in order to get their work published, now in days anyone has access to a broad library of images and more.

Legal Controversies

The Entertainment world is always full of legal battles. A lot has happened over the past few months in the Entertainment industry. For this post, I have decided to talk about the few of the most recent legal controversies. Recently there has been a lot in the Entertainment world about Prince and his legendary background and how he left no will and had no one assigned to his estate. As well as having a long history of legal battles with his music, name and life. I also looked into the recent legal battle Sony has agreed to cooperate in Anti- Poaching suit against Disney. Finally, I looked over the case with Warner Bros. and how they are being sued for allegedly stealing Kong: Skull Island Story.

Recently the passing of Prince a great artist and inspiration to the music industry has brought up a lot of questions about his life. Prince's full name is Prince Rogers Nelson. He changed his name to an unpronounceable Love symbol in the 90's during a fight with Warner Bros. Prince wanted to release more music and wanted to do his own masters. However, Warner Bros. did not allow him to do that. After that happened he started appearing in public with the word "Slave" written across his face. After a long battle with Warner Bros. Prince got his wish of being independent and changed his name back. Just one of many battles Prince experienced in his lifetime. Most recently Prince passed away and had no Will and no signed person to his estate. Now a lot of different family members are coming forth in look for a chunk of his estate. On top of that, no one was assigned to his music. There are dozens of albums that have never been released says Howard Weitzman the current attorney for Prince. Enough music for release over the next 20 years. But because of no estate owner, copyrights and other legal documents are trying to figure out the next step. In my opinion, Prince's Estate should be given to his closest family member/members. I believe that they would be in control enough to give total control over his music to his attorneys and his directors, and let them decide what the next step is for his music.

Another major battle going on now is with Sony and Disney and other Studios. Sony will be contributing $13 million to plaintiffs. This is in hopes to settle claims that it struck a deal with other studios to suppress wages and work opportunities in the animation industry. In 2014, more lawsuits came against Disney, Pixar and Lucasfilm, along with Sony Pictures and other studios. The actions were consolidated and the district court ruled against a motion to dismiss. Recently, Sony had agreed to a $13 million lump sum payment to the settlement fund. According to a motion in support, this sum represents 16.7% of the $78 million in damages. This case gets a lot of more in depth about how Sony was accused of cheating and not abiding by the terms of the no-poach agreement. However, their settlement provides the additional consideration that Sony will cooperate with plaintiffs to prepare for a declaration for all documents to the other defendants. In my opinion, this case has been going on for some time. These companies are multi-billion dollar companies and could easily work together to get this case solved and put to rest. In my opinion, there is some corporate greed and in this case, I think these companies could have had this case solved and closed. All hard working employees for these animation companies deserve the fair wages that they were promised or are needed to acquire in order to get the job done.

The final case I looked into was the recent claims between Joe DeVito and the producers of the upcoming film of Kong: Skull Island that is set to be released next year. Joe DeVito is claiming that he created the universe surrounding King Kong's mysterious home and his pitch for a TV series were turned into a feature film without giving him compensation or credit. DeVito is suing Warner Bros. for breach of implied contract, claiming the companies have used the conceptual framework that he pitched them as a basis of their film without giving proper credit or compensation. The claims that Joe DeVito is making based on the agreement he and Warner Bros. came to regarding the Kong: Skull Island. Then Warner Bros. came out with their film without the consent of Joe DeVito, When reminded Warner Bros, negotiated a kill fee with the writers and returned the rights to Kong Skull Island property to DeVito ArtWorks. In my opinion, this is something that happens all too often. I am afraid to pitch my ideas to major companies because of this happening. Warner Bros. is a strong company and makes more than enough money to cover up allegations like this. I have seen major companies do this on a number times with different creators. I think DeVito had the right move when taking Warner Bros. to court. They need to pay for taking the property of a talented individual and pay for breaching contract and taking IP from DeVito Studios.

Building Strong Negation Skills

Hello Everyone,

For this assignment, I sat down with a close friend and my mentor Lynn Brown. Lynn is a well-recognized business woman in the media fields of TV and Radio Broadcast. Lynn built her reputation based on her great knowledge in the TV and Radio industry and broke barriers when becoming one of the first women to break off from the boundaries of men being the traditional handlers of media adjustments. Lynn is known for building a powerful media agency, in a time where women in the workplace was still a very questionable thing.

Sitting down with Lynn on a daily basis I learn a lot about traditional media and the ways of the marketing world back in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s & 90’s. In return, I take the time to sit down with her and talk to her about the advancements of digital media marketing and design. Together we create a powerful team of both new & Traditional media means.  I sat down with Lynn to learn more about her strengths in negation.

1.     When working on major deals, how do you go about separating people from the problem?

Lynn’s Response: I first started my company in a man's world. Literally I got looked at weird because I was a woman in the media industry trying to build my own policies and agency. They told me I would never make it and that I would fail within the first few months. This time, that I started also made it really hard to work with men. When going to talk to them about buying media or commercials, it was absolutely terrible trying to negotiate with a person who believed a women’s place was unseen and in the house.  I met with a guy one time that was a multi-millionaire. He did not believe in my abilities and was questioning my competence from the moment I walked in the room to sit down with him.  I started giving my pitch and explaining his needs. He glared at me and asked, why I should believe you and why would I trust that you could handle such a major company as his. I was shocked when he said this to me, I proceeded to ask him, why do you think I would not be able to perform these tasks I have set for you, and of course, he went on to talk about how that I was a women etc. This was my first time learning to separate people from the problem. I told him sir with all due respect I have more experience in this field than half the men in this state. The last company I worked for ranked me the highest producing rep in the state, I have worked with hundreds of people who have all benefited well off the product I am offering. This is not a matter of myself rather than a matter of what my product can do for your business and its continued success in this changing world. I told the man that he needed to focus more on the company he was trying to keep floating above water than worry what gender of person was presenting the contract to him. After really laying into him about this he finally came to an agreement to let me do his advertising. But that was my first time ever talking to someone with that much worry about the gender of the person producing his marketing. In this instance, I was the problem that had to be separated from the solution for the business.

2.     When you were brought a contract from third party vendors, what dirty tricks did you see when they were trying to present to you?

Lynn’s Response: This entire industry is nothing but a huge game of dirty tricks. I work with a lot of third party vendors in this industry, but the dirtiest player I ever came across was a guy who was trying to take my agency away from me. He thought he would be able to outsmart me in the industry and take some of my biggest clients. The story goes when I was at my peak I had to start sourcing out some work. I was growing too fast for my own self to keep up and I was giving out extra work left and right. This company came to my office one-day looking to take on some of the extra workflows I had gone out. When it first came time to meet with them, they had brought along a contract stating that they would be willing to work with me and TAKE some of my clients with profiles bigger than a million dollars off my hands for the transfer of the accounts. Now this lingo was not in plain site in the contract. They had it spread out in the contract trying to mask, what they were trying to do. In all reality, if I would not have caught on this-this account, this company would have legally stolen some major clients of mine. I learned first hand that when negotiating contracts, make sure you read them 100% thoroughly because people can be pretty crafty with words and can steal from you without you ever know it.

3.     What experiences have you had in the means of bargaining with clients?

Lynn’s Response: This is an industry of cost effective marketing, and ROI. Clients want to see results and have security when dumping piles of money into a marketing campaign. Have I had campaigns that have failed? Yes. Of course. It happens, not everything works for everyone. Have I lost clients because of it? Yes. When working with a client you need to be confident and reassuring that what you have been the best of the best and that it's going to do exactly what you say it's going to do. Is it always 100%, no, but you need to be able to reassure your clients when you are bargaining with them that their money will be well placed? When you talk with clients bargaining can be the best part. Because if you are at the point of bargaining, you kind of already have them in your claws. They are interested, because they would not be taking the time to go that far if they were not. Never give it all away, but when writing up your contract, there’s always room for extra. Remember you can always go down, but you can never go back up in price.

Talking with Lynn regarding these topics was very insightful. She is very informative about the industry of Traditional Media Marketing and knows a lot of the best and worst ways to produce it.

Inspirational Influence on TED: Morgana Bailey

"Hiding is a progressive habit." - Morgana Bailey

To start Morgana Bailey is a TED speaker, I recently watched her speech in the LGBT section of TED. As I explored TED I realized the amount of important topics that they cover. When I selected LGBT, I was instantly taken away by Morgana Bailey's speech. Morgana told the viewers during her speech that she was a Lesbian. She explains that from a young age that she was different. She dressed differently, she acted differently, and however she hid her identity from the world because she was afraid of how they would label her as an individual. Morgana explains in her speech that "Hiding is a progressive habit" and that hiding your true identity from the world is more damaging than reveling who you truly are. Morgana continues to speak about how "Coming Out" is a different experience for everyone, those who live in large cities tend to be use to homosexuals, but for those like Morgana from a small town, it tends to be a much harder thing to face.

I found this TED talk really interesting; being gay myself I have faced many of her struggles and many struggles I still face. For starters I hid whom I really was till about the end of High School. I was afraid of what my parents would think, what my school would think and my friends. I regret waiting so long to be truthful to myself and I can see through Morgana's speech that I am not the only one who has suffered with this form of identity crisis. Being gay does not mean I should hide from the world that I am. Morgana explains that she did not want to be defined as a Lesbian, or as "Someone’s Lesbian friend." She just wanted to be known as Morgana.

What I find beyond amazing about Morgana's journey in finding herself, is that when she did finally come out and was strong enough to stand up and define her mistakes by hiding who she thoroughly was. Not only did she stand up against the hate, but also she stood up and admitted her mistakes for waiting 16 years to show who she truly was on the inside.
